The University of Manchester Equity and Merit Scholarships

The University of Manchester is providing a unique equity and merit scholarship for devloping countries since 2007 and operates in Bangladesh, Kenya and Rwanda. Equity and merit scholarship is only for postgraduate courses. The aim of this scholarship to assist talented but economically disadvantaged students from some of the world’s poorest countries.

 

Equity and Merit Scholarships for Uganda and Rwanda 2011/12

The University of Manchester is pleased to invite applications for up to seven scholarships for postgraduate taught masters starting in September 2011. The scholarships are intended to support students from Uganda Rwanda and Bangladesh who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and would not otherwise be able to study abroad.

This scholarship programme is locally managed on behalf of the University by Kulika Uganda, a registered not-for-profit organisation with over 25 years experience in managing scholarships.

The scholarships cover full tuition fees, return international airfares and living expenses.

Eligibility for Uganda and Rwanda
The scholarships are aimed at applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds. Applicants should:

  1. Be a resident citizen of Uganda or Rwanda and have not previously studied abroad;
  2. Hold a first or upper second class (or the equivalent) undergraduate degree;
  3. Have a minimum of two years relevant work experience;
  4. Be committed to returning home and able to demonstrate the potential to make a positive impact on the future of Uganda or Rwanda;
  5. Have a clear idea how studying in the UK would benefit both his/her career and the country.

The deadline is 29 April 2011. Applications received after this date will not be processed. The names of shortlisted candidates will be available on request. We regret that we will not be able to contact unsuccessful applicants. Applicants who have not heard from us by the end of May should assume that they have not been successful.

Eligibility for Bangladesh

The scholarships are aimed at applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds. Applicants should:

  • Be a resident citizen of Bangladesh and have not previously studied or worked abroad;
  • Be aged below 35 years at the time of application;
  • Have an honours/degree and a Masters degree from a public university (including national and open universities) with a minimum overall score of 70% for science and engineering subjects, and 55% for arts and social sciences; candidates with a minimum overall score of 70% in a Bachelor degree in textiles are eligible to apply; candidates who have studied for either an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at a private university are not eligible to apply;
  • Have an overall IELTS score of 6.5 ((Please note, MA Education; MA TESOL; Environmental Impact Assessment & Management; Planning; and Urban Regeneration and Development all require IELTS 7.0);
  • Be committed to returning home and able to demonstrate the potential to make positive impact on the future of Bangladesh;
  • Have a clear idea how studying in the UK would benefit both his/her career and Bangladesh as a whole.
