Malaga for students: where culture meets nightlife

One of my favourite things about studying in London is that you are so close to the rest of Europe.  I was struggling to decide between cheap Spain holidays until a friend recommended Malaga.  Rich Spanish culture in a bustling city on the Costa del Sol sounded good to me!

I did my research and was totally convinced:Malaga is within easy reach of both surf and ski resorts, ancient castles and modern art, fresh seafood and relaxing cafes and that famous Spanish nightlife that never stops.  Not to mention that the average winter day is 17 degrees Celsius, which was so nice after living in London.  I rounded up some friends and found some cheap flights to Malaga and we were on our way!

The first day we started with the Picasso Museum, and then wandered through the charming old town to the Atarazanas food market for a luscious fresh lunch.  We trekked up to Gibralfaro Castle which had great views of the ancient city and sparking Mediterranean, all bathed in that special afternoon sun I like to call “golden hour”.  After a quick trip back to the hotel, we headed out for dinner – the fresh seafood was the best I’ve ever had, washed down with wine from a local vineyard.  Fueled up, we hit the town and moved from bar to club until later than I can remember – the sun was nearly up when we left, and there were still people partying long after.

The next day we rented a car and drove to a beach village nearby, and lay in the warm sun recovering from the night before! We are already planning our next trip, with much more time to sample the food and nightlife as well as take day trips to the Caves of Nerja, local golf courses, vineyards, or even a ski trip to the snowy Sierra Nevada mountains.  I love London, but I can’t wait to get away to Malaga again!
